What a privilege it is to be able to help those suffering with breast cancer. During the past eleven years Hopkins Breast Cancer Inc. has been on the forefront helping those in the local community who are suffering with breast cancer. As we look back over the years since Hopkins Breast Cancer Inc. was founded, we are happy with the knowledge that we are helping to save lives and bring some relief to the survivors who are helped by our assistance financially.

Hoop It Up For Breast Cancer

September 28-30, 2018 - Get Ready for the...
19th Annual Donna Hopkins "Hoop It Up For Breast Cancer" Basketball Tournament
This year we will host the 19th Annual Donna Hopkins "Hoop It Up for Breast Cancer" Basketball Tournament September 28-30, 2018. Donna Hopkins, the founder, will conduct the tournament with support from the Montgomery County Recreation Department, the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, and the Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Three Day Tournament

  • Tournament is comprised of teams of both men and women at least 18 years of age and older with 12 players per team.
  • Entry fee for each team is $400.
  • Double Elimination.
  • Tournament T-shirts will be provided for each team member to wear for the tournament.
  • 1st and 2nd place teams will receive awards.
  • Form of payment for teams: Cash, Certified Check, or Money Order.
  • Tournament fees or contribution to this event are tax deductible.

Tournament Rules

    NCAA Rules - Men
  • 20 minute half's
  • Timeouts (3) full (2) 30's
  • 5 fouls per player
  • First half - clock stops the last minute (1:00) of half on all whistles and timeouts
  • Second half - clock stops on all whistles in the last 2:00 of half (and overtimes), and every made field goal in the 00:59.9 (as in regular NCAA games).
  • Fill out the Registration Form with team roster, and every member of the team must also sign the Waiver Form in ink
  • Tournament registration form must be accompanied by a check for the full amount. Please do not mail cash
  • Teams can add players to their roster as long as the player has not played on another team
  • Each player in the games must wear tournament T-shirts
  • Cut off for adding players is when teams pick up their t-shirts with final roster
  • Coaches will no longer be allowed to call timeouts during live ball situations and, with only a few expectations, teams will get just 10 total seconds to advance the ball past half court instead of resetting the clock if there is stoppage
  • Teams also will have15 seconds, instead of 20 seconds, to make a substitution when a player fouls out
  • NCAA Rules - Women
  • Four 10 minute quarters
  • Shooting fouls: Teams will reach the bonus and shoot two free throws on the 5th team foul in each quarter
  • Team fouls reset to zero at the start of each quarter
  • Timeouts: four timeouts (three 30-second timeouts and one 60-second timeout)
  • Each team will have one 30-second timeout in each overtime period, plus any used timeouts remaining from the second half
  • If a team reaches the bonus in the fourth quarter, the team would remain in the bonus during any additional overtime periods
  • Teams to advance the ball to the frontcourt following a timeout immediately after a made basket in the last 59.9 seconds of the fourth quarter and any overtime periods
  • Teams also will be allowed to advance the ball to the frontcourt after securing the ball from a rebound or a change of possession. In these scenarios, the ball would be inbounded at the 28-foot mark on the side of the court where the scorer's table is located

Type Of Registration

***Unsportsman like conduct (profanity, trash talking, arguing with officials, etc.) will not be tolerated. Any players displaying this kind of behavior will be given a warning or immediately ejected, depending on the severity of the act. Fighting will result in an immediate ejection. Any ejected player will be required to sit out the first half of his/her team's next game. Fighting may result in disqualification from further participation in the tournament.***

Tournament Schedule

  • The tournament starts on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
  • Friday, three games are scheduled starting at 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday games will run the entire day starting at 8:00 a.m.
  • Sunday games start at 8:00 a.m. concluding with semifinal and championship games for both men and women.

Representatives Available to Answer Questions

Throughout the tournament breast cancer literature will be available for the public. Health professionals and other representatives from various hospitals and other organizations will be on hand to answer any questions about breast cancer detection and treatment.

There will be free drawings, raffles and a lot more. Throughout the tournament there will be guest appearances by various sports celebrities.
